We are proud to recognize our 2010 Poster Artist Jim Green.

Jim considers himself a "returning" artist, having majored in fine art in college but then spending the majority of his career in the commercial arts areas of advertising, promotions and graphics.  Titles of technical illustrator, graphic designer, freelance photographer, and advertising and promotions management compile a brief resume.

After moving to Stillwater three years ago as Director of Marketing for Cub Foods, Jim began painting in acrylics regularly in an attempt to return to his intended career from high school and college.  He recently retired from Cub/SUPERVALU and currently works as Vice President of Business Development for GA Communications, a graphic, creative and photography organization in the western suburbs of Minneapolis.

The Stillwater arts community has provided inspiration and encouragement to Jim, much of which has come since he became involved in ArtReach St. Croix as a member of the board.  "Interaction with other artists and those who appreciate the arts is a way enhance one's own talents,"  says Jim.  His wife, Val, has served on the Summer Tuesdays Event Committee for the past two years, so he has spent many Tuesday evenings enjoying the activities.  He believes that Summer Tuesdays is a wonderful, colorful, fun, family event.  He wanted to capture that feeling and image with the poster art, while still applying his evolving technique.

Jim's habit of drawing geometric doodles and patterns while on the phone or sitting in meetings prompted Val to suggest that he use some of his doodle designs as subject matter.  He
looked at the doodles as "exercises' to get back into it.  Since then he's moved from pure abstracts to converting some of his photographs into paintings while keeping the same relative feel and colors.  The Summer Tuesdays piece is one of the few times he's moved toward a totally imaginary, semi-realistic scene.  It was also his first commissioned work.

His work has been displayed in the Supreme Bean Coffee Shop, Stillwater Artist's Guild Gallery, Gallery 310, and at the St. Croix Gallery located in the ArtReach facility on North 4th Street.  The Summer Tuesdays poster piece will be raffled off during Summer Tuesdays as a fund raiser.

Roxanne Wightman

Roxanne moved from Los Angeles to Stillwater in 1992, after meeting her future husband, Doug, on a movie shoot in Minneapolis in 1990.  Having worked in the film industry as a hairstylist for many years in Los Angeles, she moved into a beautiful old home in Stillwater.  Between trips flying out of town to work on movies, Roxanne has been involved with Summer Tuesdays, and is celebrating her sixth year as a committee member. "This project is so much fun to be a part of and each year we push ourselves to make it better," she says.  Because Roxanne has to travel for most of her jobs,

"It means a lot to me to live in a community like this and to volunteer my time for projects like Summer Tuesdays. I have always wanted to find my place to call home.  This is home.  A very comforting thought when on the road."

Last year she worked on the movie "The Next 3 Days" which was shot on location in Pittsburgh, PA  and this spring took her to Los Angeles for a HBO Pilot called "Luck".  This summer she will join the crew of the movie "The Help" in Mississippi.  Roxanne brings her love of film and entertainment, incredible organizational skills, and her love of Stillwater to this project.

Joci Tilsen

Joci is one of the founders of Summer Tuesdays, and is currently the Director of Programs for the Minnesota Food Association.  She was co-owner of The Valley Bookseller on Main Street from October 1998 - March 2008.  Joci has served on the Boards of the Greater Stillwater Area Chamber of Commerce and the Upper Midwest Booksellers Association.  During her twenty years of nonprofit management experience; thirteen of those were spent as Executive Director of two organizations specializing in child abuse and neglect prevention and intervention.  Joci has double Masters degrees in Health and Human Services Administration and Management.  She has a broad range of experience in direct service and administration.

Val Green

Val and her husband, Jim, have recently moved back to Minnesota after living away for twelve years.  Talking with Joci Tilsen at a book club meeting sparked Val's interest in Summer Tuesdays as a way to become inovlved in the Stillwater community.  As the newest at-large committee member, Val is still learning the hows and ways of Summer Tuesdays, but with an extensive background in corporate food service and catering, she brings strong creative and organizational skills to this exciting event.  "We love being a part of the Stillwater community," she says.

Jill Roth

Jill has lived in the Stillwater area with her family for the past fourteen years.  She is an active volunteer in the Stillwater School District.  Having grown up in Saint Paul, she was a frequent visitor to Stillwater in her youth, and always enjoyed the small town feel of this close knit community.  Jill created hand-crafted Summer Tuesdays sponsor recognition pieces for three past seasons, and returns to the Summer Tuesdays Committee for her third year as Event Coordinator.

Norman Steere

Norm moved to the Stillwater area in 1991 with his wife, Lyn, who died in 1999. Norm retired in 2000, and became active in the Stillwater community in 2001. In 2002 he was one of the organizers of Movies by the Bridge, predecessor of Summer Tuesdays. As one of the founders of Summer Tuesdays, Norm has played an active role except for two years when his wife Barbara Klemme was ill. One of Norm’s projects was the development and updating of the Downtown Directory for Stillwater, a map listing the categories and locations of all the retail businesses in the Historic District of downtown Stillwater. Impetus for the project was Larry Nelson’s statement that downtown Stillwater had more business “doors” than the Southdale Mall, but no directory. In 2003, Norm, Barbara Klemme and Mary Schmidt organized Theatre Associates of Stillwater, which has presented twenty-one live performances since then, most in downtown Stillwater. Norm would like to see the downtown enriched with a broad array of public art, and a cultural center on Main Street with space for live theatrical performances, movies, exhibits, and space for related cultural organizations such as Franconia Sculpture Park, Arcola Mills, the National Park Service and St. Croix River groups.
