Ninth Annual Summer Tuesdays Kicks Off in Downtown Stillwater

By: Jill Roth

July 08, 2011

Join us, Tuesday, July 12, on the St. Croix River waterfront at the foot of the historic lift bridge for a new season of the ever popular Summer Tuesdays.  Held in beautiful Lowell Park, this free, family-friendly six week event runs through August 16, and is a perennial favorite for all to enjoy.

An eclectic marketplace is open from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m.; featuring over 40 vendors presenting such items as clothing, hand crafted art and photography, massage, jewelry and much more.  Local restaurants, including The Green Room and Aristo’s, will also join us in the market, providing a wide variety of delicious options for your picnic supper.

Bring your blanket or favorite folding chair and find a spot on the lawn to enjoy some great entertainment on our stage, set up in view of the iconic gazebo.  Opening night promises to keep you coming back for more all season!  New this year is our Theater Sampler, a fifteen minute short beginning at 5:30 p.m., featuring performers from the St. Croix Festival Theater.  Two musical performances are on schedule each night, kicking off with Men In Black, an acappella quintet serving as our Opening Act at 6:00 p.m.  Main Stage Music takes over at 7:00 p.m. when Sig Daddy and the Dew Dawgs take the stage for full-out dancing in the grass fun!

At dusk we’ll pull out the trusty screen and show the movie “Babe.”  Babe, a pig raised by sheepdogs, learns to herd sheep with a little help from Farmer Hoggett, played by the wonderful James Cromwell.  This movie is a classic favorite with movie-goers of all ages.  Pop, popcorn, water and frozen novelties will be available for purchase during the movie.

Summer Tuesdays continues to provide free, family-friendly fun thanks to our many local sponsors, supporters, and volunteers.  To thank them with your business, or to become one of them, please visit our website for more information.  Please also consider making a donation when we pass the bucket through the crowd.  We are grateful to each and every donor, at every level, for helping us to make this event possible.

Summer Tuesdays events expected to stay put in Stillwater

Looks like Summer Tuesdays inStillwaterwon’t be on the move after all.

The popular summer events, which feature a market and local food and music, have been held on Tuesday nights at Lowell Park since 2005. Earlier this year, the Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce announced plans to temporarily move Summer Tuesdays to the Washington County Historic Courthouse because of planned construction in downtownStillwater.

Now, a new group – Summer Tuesdays Inc. – is running the program, and organizers say they will be staying downtown. The events will run July 12 to Aug. 16.

The chamber has transferred all management and ownership responsibilities of the events to a group led by Cory Buettner, the owner of Leo’s Grill & Malt Shop, Chuck Dougherty of the Water Street Inn and Cassie McLemore of Northern Vineyards.

“We’re excited about keeping the event downtown right by the river…where people want to be,” Buettner said. “We’ll be featuring local musicians and local vendors. We want everyone to come to down to our beautiful waterfront to experience whatMain StreetStillwaterhas to offer.”

Todd Streeter, the chamber’s executive director, said the change in management was a “win-win” for the chamber and downtown merchants.

“This event was not a good fit for where the chamber needs to focus its energies,” Streeter said. “It really belongs where it once started, so we’re very pleased this very popular downtown event has direct downtown ownership.”

Applications are still being accepted for sponsors, market exhibitors and food vendors.

The market is open from 5 to 8 p.m. each Tuesday, with music from 6 to 8 p.m. and movies at dusk. For more information, go to summertuesdays.com.

Summer Tuesdays not “sold”

An article in the June 14th Stillwater Gazette incorrectly announced that the Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce had “sold” Summer Tuesdays when in fact the Chamber simply transferred ownership and management responsibilities to a newly formed group led by Chamber members Cory Buettner of Leo’s Grill and Malt Shop and Chuck Dougherty of the Water Street Inn.  The Main Street Stillwater Independent Business Alliance is not involved with the new ownership group.
